DRM Free Ebooks from Tor/Forge

The Sci-Fi/Fantasy publishers Tor and Forge, imprints of MacMillan, have recently removed the Digital Rights Management (DRM) software from all of their ebooks. DRM is used by publishers to prevent digital piracy, but all too often, DRM can get in the way of perfectly legal things people want to do with the books they’ve purchased, like transfer them from one device to another. Though the intentions of DRM are good, many people believe DRM doesn’t really effectively limit piracy while at the same time making ebooks inconvenient to the people who actually buy them. You can read more about the publisher’s decision here.

What this means for you is that you can now read any Tor/Forge ebook purchased from any retailer on any device. With the free ebook management software Calibre you can change any type of ebook into any other type of ebook. This means you could purchase a Tor ebook from Porter Square Books and use Calibre to transfer it onto a your Kindle. (Full instructions on how to do that here)

We think this is a great idea, so we’re featuring some Tor/Forge ebooks on our home page for the month of August, including books by John Scalzi, Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan and more. Check out the full list here.
